A GLASS COW ESSAY: Oily Louisiana ~Cain Burdeau~THE RESOURCE curse then, is this paradox – “the Paradox of Plenty” that economists talk of – endangering and often ruining societies and economies in possession of an abundance of oil, or a similarly high-value resource or commodity.
Power corrupts. And oil, poverty and war are the resource curse in a nutshell.
This is the fate of Louisiana too: It is oil rich and still poor.
The swampy wilderness that surrounds New Orleans is abundant in fossil fuels.
Unfortunately, after the destructive logging and farming, oil exploration came to the Mississippi River delta in Louisiana and the state was subsequently industrialized.
The tale of this Oil Curse is one of talking about what made modern Louisiana and also about why tying itself inescapably to the fate of “black gold” the state’s overall benefits have decreased rather than increased.

The Town From "True Blood" Is Filled With Toxic Explosives the EPA Fears Will Blow Up ~Tim Murphy, Mother Jones
~For the past few years, tiny Doyline, Louisiana, best known as the Southern Gothic setting of HBO's True Blood, has been perched next to a powder keg. Next month, the Environmental Protection Agency will decide whether to light a match.
In 2012, an explosion at Camp Minden, a former military base just
outside of town that had become a hub for munitions contractors, sent a
7,000-foot mushroom cloud into the Louisiana sky. The blast rattled
homes as far away as Arkansas and forced Doyline residents to evacuate.
"I thought I was in Afghanistan," one resident told
the Associated Press. State police investigators, who raided Camp
Minden soon after, discovered that Explo Systems Inc., a munitions
recycling company that operated there, was storing 15 million pounds of
toxic military explosives on-site—with some of it in in paper sacks,
cardboard boxes, or even outside. After the raid, the company, at the
direction of state officials, moved the munitions into old bunkers the
Louisiana National Guard had made available on the base in order to
reduce the risk of an explosion caused by a fire or a lightning strike. ~Read more.

Louisiana faces the highest rates of sea level rise in the world.
As policy and funding debates rage over how to best restore and protect
our coastal communities, local leaders also look for allies elsewhere. On
the other side of the globe, they've found sympathetic ears in Vietnam.
That nation also has a below-sea-level region at the mouth of a great
river. People who live in coastal river deltas have a lot in common. One
thing they share is a lack of understanding about the challenges they
face due to climate change. A community thousands of miles away, with
similar urgent issues, might understand the needs better than a
community’s own government officials. The two places are talking and
meeting more than ever. They aim to find out how shared geography might
lead to shared solutions.
