Oil Drum beat on Well Integrity Tests
Did BP call the plumber?~slabbed
~Jonsson reports that six weeks ago, University of California, Berkeley, engineering professor Robert Bea received a late-night call from an anonymous plumber. According to Bea — who had formerly worked as an oil-industry executive before his present gig as an academically backed manager of engineering crises — the “mystery plumber” reached out to him because he had an idea for how to plug BP’s busted well in the Gulf. The plumber provided Bea with sketches of a containment cap that upgraded some of the design flaws in the cap the oil company deployed in its unsuccessful bid to plug the leak several weeks ago. Bea passed the plumber’s sketches on to a contact at the Coast Guard, and to a panel of experts who were evaluating proposed schemes to repair the leak submitted by the general public. Jonsson writes that when Bea first got a glimpse of the containment cap that has stopped the flow of oil into the Gulf, he noticed striking similarities to the designs dreamed up by the plumber.

BP buying up Gulf scientists for legal defense, newspaper alleges~John Kelly

~But! But! What Would Ivor Say?? WWIS???
Film Screening: Harry Shearer's "The Big Un-Easy"~Now that Harry's Producer has completely fucked the shark on the timing of this premier, we might as well pick on Ivor van Heerden, a star and the new BP Scientist Poster Child!
~Oh Snap! Now Ivor van Heerden is an Oil Drilling Expert!
~His take is that the fix took so long because it required extremely difficult engineering, taking place a mile below the surface. “They had to fully research the problem; the integrity of the remaining riser; the structural integrity of the ocean bottom above the oil deposit; and then design a structure that would be multifaceted and allow complete closure but also the ability to bleed off oil if needed.” He describes the capping as “a real plus.” He also thinks the oiling of the Louisiana coastline would have been far worse already if they hadn’t been managing the outflow of fresh water from the Mississippi River to combat it.
“But the river is now down, and the potential for serious oiling over a larger area exists. So far we have 63 miles of coastline impacted by heavy oiling."
~Editilla Bull Shits-a-wella~Is this fucking punk'smurf idiot kidding us?
What a mouthpiece! What a suck my bile BP mouthpiece! Judas fuck me.
Why is this former hurricane hero turning himself into a BP PR Suck Mouth?
Harry Shearer needs to understand that Editilla isn't among the Rising Tide Blogger-Club Corps'mouth/Creme suck'ass krewe. There is simply too much more than a freaky TV Show going down here.
We will not allow Ivor van Heerden to use this latest man-made disaster to market himself on the previous man-made disaster. We just don't play nice with NOLA. Van Heerden can fucking starve as far as we and every other lost Bayou Child is concerned! I mean, fuck this bitch. Whatever the Hell he thinks he's doing has nothing to do with the decimation of Louisiana culture does it? Ivor van Heerden is All BP ALL THE TIME!
If Editilla could describe the level of betrayal that this son of a bitch is heaping on the state of Louisana I would, but words frankly escape even me! I have but this to say: Yeah let's get this opportunistic prick his job back advising young students! Yes, let's have this BP Spokesperson teaching our future coastal scientists!
Yes, let us walk ourselves into Dante's 9th Inferno behind Ivor van Heerden?
Yes let us put a gun in our mouth and blow our brains away for BP!
Let's get real here: Ivor van Heerden is selling out Louisana, right?

Levee authority engineers to focus on deliberate rust design issues by Corps ~New Orleans Corps of Engineers defends using "sacrificial" steel for pilings ~Sheila Grissett
~"The consultants sort of presented a mixed bag . . . and no resolution," said engineer Bob Turner, the regional levee authority's executive director. "What I've been asking the corps for, and what hasn't happened yet, is to get all our experts and all their experts in a room together and let them argue it out while we listen. I'm not accusing the corps of not doing the right thing, but they've got to show us that they're doing the right thing on this issue," he said. "That hasn't happened yet, and I'm not comfortable walking away from it does."

Oil Industry Expert suspects BP has ulterior motive behind oil well cap
~Raw Story~Oil industry expert Bob Cavnar isn't buying the official story. He told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on Wednesday that the repeated missteps cast doubt on BP's explanation for why the cap was necessary in the first place. Cavnar believes that BP's true goal is to make it harder to measure the flow of oil from the damaged well, because under the Clean Water Act, it will be liable for civil penalties of up to $4300 for every barrel spilled.
"While they have every incentive to get the well killed, BP also has every incentive to not capture 100% of the well flow until they do," Cavnar wrote last week at Huffington Post. "As soon as they do capture all the flow, then a real, measurable number will be in front of the public, and that's the last thing BP wants, since that number will then be used to extrapolate environmental damage, hence per barrel fines that will likely run to the tens of billions anyway."
BP's Broken Window~Andrew Beattie
~Many people see economics as an idealistic science that applies to the world in only the most broad and tangential ways. This may be true of some economic theories, but it certainly doesn't hold for all. While the BP oil spill disaster is just that - a disaster - it does offer an opportunity to look at one important economic fallacy: the broken window.

Sea turtle egg evacuations begin along oiled Gulf of Mexico~The effort began in earnest along Florida's Panhandle, with two loggerhead nests excavated. Up to 800 more nests across Alabama and Florida beaches will be dug up in the coming months in an attempt to move some 70,000 eggs to safety. They are being transported to a warehouse at Florida's Kennedy Space Center where they will incubate and, hopefully, hatch before being released into the Atlantic Ocean.

La. official says BP may cut payments to 40,000~BP has decided to reduce payments to tens of thousands of people whose claim files are incomplete, the secretary of Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services Kristy Nichols said. “This action is irresponsible and in complete contrast to BP’s repeated promise that they will ‘make things right,”’ she wrote in a letter sent Friday to federal oil spill claims administrator Kenneth Feinberg. It was not immediately clear how severe the payment cuts would be. BP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
