Krewe of Houmas' parade will be led by the Spirit of Louisiana~The Spirit of Louisiana fire truck was donated to the city of New York in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The 42,000-pound truck was built by Ferrera Fire Apparatus Co. of Holden, with money raised by Louisiana residents. The fire truck was made to New York specifications and can pump 1,000 gallons of water in one minute. Louisiana later donated two hazardous-material trucks that aid in hazardous spill cleanup operations.

New Orleans is regaining its tree canopy, and other Signs of Recovery
~New Orleans is recovering its lush tree canopy, thanks to private and public replanting. Parkway Partners planted its 10,000th post-storm tree this month, and Hike for KaTREEna has planted nearly 13,000 trees, mostly crape myrtles and magnolias, since 2007. The St. Charles Avenue Association has planted almost 300 young live oaks in the past five years and will plant its last trees this spring.

~Panelists include:

• Adam Babich: Babich teaches environmental law and directs the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic, which is regularly ranked among the Top Ten environmental law clinics of U.S. law schools.
• Steve Beatty: Beatty is Managing Editor of The Lens, a nonprofit media outlet focusing on the New Orleans area. Beatty is a veteran investigative reporter and editor, he previously worked for The New Orleans Times-Picayune and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
• Tom Devine: Devine is GAP Legal Director, and has worked at the organization since 1979, assisting thousands of whistleblowers over that time. Tom has been a leader in the campaigns to pass or defend 20 major national or international whistleblower laws, including every one enacted over the last two decades. He has also authored or co-authored numerous books, including 2011's The Corporate Whistleblowers Survival Guide: A Handbook for Committing the Truth.
• Susan Hutson: Hutson heads the City of New Orleans Office of the Independent Police Monitor (IPM), an independent, civilian police oversight agency. Its mission is to improve cooperation and trust between the community and the New Orleans Police Department through objective review of police misconduct investigations.
• Scott Porter: At the request of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Scott Porter, a biologist and diver with the nonprofit EcoRigs, dove into the oil plume (reported to be safe by NOAA) from the Deepwater Horizon disaster for water samples to determine toxicity. In exchange, NOAA would fund the dives and provide test results. Porter became severely ill after he began diving. During that time NOAA did not provide the test results, but EcoRigs was also working with non-government scientists to test similar samples, which showed high toxicity. NOAA cut off communications, never providing payment. Porter educates the public about environmental damage and public health threats from the oil spill.
• Sandy Rosenthal: Rosenthal is the founder of Levees.org, a nonprofit advocacy organization devoted to educating America on the facts associated with the 2005 catastrophic flooding of the New Orleans region. Started in late 2005, the project now has chapters in Illinois, Florida, Oregon and New York.

It was incredible with beautiful weather, thus the Indians laid everything out on the ground before parading so everyone could get all the pics they wanted. In fact, I never saw a single Indian refuse a photograph with anyone all day the length of the parade!

When they finally did get some audio, we had to endure Dude talking about his dry-cleaning career as floats and bands rolled by without description. Yeah, the dumbass was talking about Dry-Cleaning School in Silver Springs, Maryland. No shit! The Nice Lady commentator at least named a few floats and bands, but the down-take is this: shut your yappers and talk about the parades and your relationship to Mardi Gras.
That said, it was fun to follow the duo's Twitter live exchanges with people watching the parade locally (-: such as Youses' Truly: the Troublemaker ;-) and from around the country. It should be noted that these aren't TV people @ nola.com, so their technical dexterity isn't perhaps congroovient with Live Video Coverage. We hope they fix the technical problems. As for the inane banter...
WWLTV Parade Cam unfortunately covers only 1 parade at a time until Mardi Gras day, but that is good, and MG day's coverage is exquisite, all over the parade route. They are the ones to watch for The Rex Toast and Zulu.

~MISSION: Impossible-Canine Protocol Armstrong Bark Reloaded.
Your "mission," if you choose to accept it, is to dress (your dog and/or you) in a costume appropriate for this Mission. The cast of Mission Impossible were constantly changing their identities to gain access to the CIA at Langley, The Kremlin, Foreign Embassies, etc. They disguised themselves as firefighters, elevator repairmen, waiters, Russian military officers, Senators, (hey what about Congressman Weiner for the Dachshund crowd.) The opportunities are endless. There were action sequences on trains, helicopters, sports cars, boats, motorcycles. They wore rubber masks changing their identities from young to old, male to female -- hey, perhaps canine to feline. Don't limit yourself to Tom Cruise in a black muscle tee (although that's fine!). Rent one of the movies and get ideas while eating a bowl of pop-corn. We can't wait to sneak into Armstrong Park on February 12. This message will self-destruct in five seconds. (Please note: If your costume is a trenchcoat please be sure to wear suitable clothing beneath in case of warm weather...)

Mini Mardi Gras: New Orleans’ Only Petit Parade ~GO NOLA

~The New Orleans Healing Center will celebrate Carnival Around the World at the premier of its expanded arts bazaar the weekend of February 11 & 12. In addition to the daytime Crossroads Arts Bazaar on Saturday, the New Orleans Healing Center will present a “2nd Saturday Night Market” coinciding with the St. Claude Art Walk that evening and a “2nd Sunday Art Market” mega-bazaar on Sunday.
The “Second Saturday” and “2nd Sunday” events are the first in a recurring series of expand arts bazaar offerings on the 2nd weekend of every month. Complimentary wine and cheese will be served beginning at 6pm Saturday. All bazaars that weekend will feature a wide range of works such as sculpture, textiles, paintings, clothing, and jewelry as well as repurposed items and art made from recycled objects. In keeping with the “Carnival Around the World” theme of the weekend, festivities will feature live Carnival music from New Orleans, Trinidad, and Brazil; a limbo contest; “Trini Winin’” dance instruction and demonstration; Mardi Gras beads-making workshops for kids; decorate-it-yourself king cakes; food samples from Trinidad, Brazil, and New Orleans; parades, and more.
