Corps says West Bank flood protection system completed ~Jeff Adelson, The Advocate NO
~“The West Bank in particular has experienced a significant increase in protection,” Jefferson Parish President John Young said Monday. But as officials cut the ribbon on the project in front of the white floodwalls that guard the far edge of the West Bank system, local flood protection officials and representatives of the state’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority were conspicuously absent. Those agencies, which are charged with maintaining and overseeing flood protection efforts in the area, said they skipped what they saw as a premature celebration. “There is no goal line that has been crossed,” Coastal Restoration and Protection Authority Chairman Garret Graves said. “None.”

Army Corps, public officials break ground on permanent canal closure project at 17th Street Canal ~Mark Schleifstein
“Of course, while it was borne by a natural disaster, we also need to remember so it never happens again that 70 percent of the catastrophic flooding was a man-made disaster, breaches due to design flaws and other flaws here at the 17th, and other outfall canals and some of the other protection systems,” Vitter said. “I don’t say that to dwell on the negative or to dwell on all of the miseries that folks have been through, but again to refocus us on the importance of today and all of our unified commitment that it never happen again.”

Big Data for Disaster Response: A List of Wrong Assumptions ~iRevolution
“It might be provocative to call into question one of the hottest tech movements in generations, but it’s not really fair. That’s because how companies and people benefit from Big Data, Data Science or whatever else they choose to call the movement toward a data-centric world is directly related to what they expect going in. Arguing that big data isn’t all it’s cracked up to be is a strawman, pure and simple—because no one should think it’s magic to begin with.” ~Derrick Herris

Tropical Storm Andrea (2013) Advisory 3
For the 77 hours from 05 AM EDT Thu Jun 06 to 10 AM EDT Sun Jun 09

A storm surge of 2 - 4 feet is predicted for Tampa Bay northward to Apalachicola, and rip currents will be a risk for swimmers who brave the high surf. Fort Pickens, located in Gulf Islands National Seashore on a barrier island offshore from Pensacola, Florida, has been closed to visitors due to the approaching storm. A single 2-lane road vulnerable to storm surges runs to Fort Pickens. Officials want to prevent a repeat of the situation that occurred in September 2011, when Tropical Storm Lee pushed a storm surge over the road that blocked it with sand and debris, trapping numerous campers and visitors in Fort Pickens.

Levee, trees sink after week of tremors at sinkhole ~The Advocate, River Parishes BureauA 400- to 500-foot section of the containment levee around the Assumption Parish sinkhole has gone under water after almost a week-long active period of tremors, parish officials said Tuesday.
Parish officials said in a blog post that the levee sunk as part of a broader subsidence along the southern side the sinkhole. Trees along the southwest side of the sinkhole are also showing signs of sinking, in some cases as much at 10 feet down, parish officials said.

~CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
The Memphis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, initiated Phase I flood fighting activities at 7 a.m. on Monday, June 3 due to high Upper Mississippi River stages.
The area of flooding is located in the northern portion of the Memphis District near Cape Girardeau and Dutchtown, Mo.
The Corps said significant rainfall over the last week across portions of Missouri, Iowa and Illinois have caused the river to rise again after a period of falling levels.
Based on current National Weather Service forecasts, the Corps of Engineers expects to move to a Phase II flood fight on June 4.

~Tourism, fast becoming the largest global business, employs one out of twelve persons and produces $6.5 trillion of the world’s economy. In a groundbreaking book, Elizabeth Becker uncovers how what was once a hobby has become a colossal enterprise with profound impact on countries, the environment, and cultural heritage. This invisible industry exploded at the end of the Cold War. In 2012 the number of tourists traveling the world reached one billion. Now everything can be packaged as a tour: with the high cost of medical care in the U.S., Americans are booking a vacation and an operation in countries like Turkey for a fraction of the cost at home.
