Next step could increase oil gush
2nd RELIEF WELL SUSPENDED
---BP Executives Still At Large

~The Advocate~ BP’s latest plan to capture oil from a massive leak in the Gulf of Mexico could result in a temporary increase of up to 20 percent in the oil flow until the containment dome is in place, government scientists said Monday.
Also Monday, U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., gave Tony Hayward, BP’s chief executive officer, until Friday to provide proof that there are no underwater oil plumes. Hayward has denied the existence of the plumes while scientists say they’ve found them in the Gulf. In another development, BP admitted that drilling on the second relief well was still suspended even though reports on the Deepwater Horizon’s federal response website say it’s continuing.
~Editilla Press'A'rillas~STOP THE PRESSES!
What!?! Stop saying BP is drilling this Relief Well and it will be done by August --THAT "STILL" AIN'T HAPPENING! BP has been apparently lying about that too. But this is an important issue, a significant failure of American knowhow and accountability that has never really been addressed by the government.
That oversight will almost certainly lead to more disasters.
It’s essential context for understanding Katrina, emergency management, and government dysfunction in general.
Don’t leave it out, blogosphere.

Oil spill: Obama's Category 5 disaster~Virginia Pilot
The editorial makes valid points regarding responding to disasters. However, there is no evidence that "the Bush administration - and presidents before him - ignored warnings about the inadequacy of the levees protecting New Orleans."

The wholesale collapse of the federal levee system protecting New Orleans was a surprise to everyone in the city and the nation. While it's true that Ivor van Heerden Deputy Director of LSU Hurricane Center predicted severe flooding due to overtopping, no one foresaw the breaching and failure of the levee system in 53 locations.

William Kohlman, an insurance executive in New Orleans told his clients from 1985 - 2005 that they should buy flood insurance. "But never in my wildest dreams" said Mr. Kohlman, "did I think the entire flood system could break and fail."

This distinction is important because to say the Bush administration ignored warnings about 'inadequate levees' implies that the citizens of New Orleans were stupid for living there and imbeciles for rebuilding. And such disparagement is exactly what happened in the weeks, months and years after the flood.

For this reason, we ask that the Pilot Online take care in phraseology when discussing the horrific flood of New Orleans in 2005.

  • BP apparently insisted on using nitrogen-infused cement at a depth the rig hadn't ever used it before, over Transocean's objection.
  • BP executives have refused to testify.

BP’s Murky Management of Information~From Louisiana’s tarred beaches to the silty scenes on the seabed a mile beneath the Gulf of Mexico, there have been repeated instances in which BP has tried to limit or delay the flow of information to the public on what is clearly now the biggest oil “spill” in United States history. Every time BP delays releasing information on its oil gusher and slick, the company’s credibility sinks a bit lower.

Counsel for George Barisich, President of the United Commercial Fisherman’s Association, announced today in open court that an agreement has been made with BP in the attorney’s continuing efforts to add transparency and accountability to the claims process.

On behalf of the group, Attorney Val P. Exnicios presented the agreement, which stated:
1. Claimants with lawyers will not be treated any differently than those without;
2. BP will maintain the confidentiality of all claimants financial information; and
3. BP has agreed to hire more multi-lingual translators to process claims.
The motion for court supervision, or alternatively to appoint a special master or special master over claims will be continued on June 4.

The Court also indicated that BP should cooperate with plaintiff’s counsel in determining whom to appoint as the independent mediator that BP announced yesterday would be overseeing claims-payment process for damages caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Mr. Barisich stated, “I am very pleased that my attorneys have been able to advance this case so rapidly.”
On May 15, Plaintiff George Barisich, President of the United Commercial Fisherman’s Association, Inc., submitted a memorandum to the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana, in support of his motion to appoint a special master to provide oversight and implementation guidance for the claims processing program initiated by BP to provide emergency interim compensation for the damages caused by the ongoing oil spill.

Alaskan offers Louisiana advice
~Amy Wold

~The Exxon Valdez spill occurred 21 years ago, but it still feels like yesterday, said Gunnar Knapp, professor of economics at the University of Alaska Anchorage Institute of Social and Economic Research.
One lesson is that the oil spill in Alaska raised a number of opportunities and challenges for scientists, he said.
Soon after the oil spill occurred, decision makers wanted answers to basic science questions that no one had been interested in funding before the spill, Knapp said. That meant some of that basic science still needed to be done.
In addition, there is a lot of money at stake after an oil spill, so the conversations between scientists, that need to be done for good science, don’t happen, he said.
“It’s shocking. You find people attacking you and your research because what you find is inconvenient,” Knapp said.
