Whirlwind Tour of Failed Corps Levees ~Society of Professional Journalists
~On board the bus will be a senior representative of the Army Corps of Engineers’ New Orleans District office, which oversaw the construction; a representative of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East, which pairs with the state of Louisiana as local sponsor for the system; and Levees.org founder Sandy Rosenthal, a corps critic who has helped ensure the new system was built correctly. We’ll drive through several of the areas worst flooded when levees and floodwalls failed in the aftermath of Katrina.

Only this morning Val was a bit up on breaking news: "Hey, Juicy," he says "Did you hear that one of the World Trade Center towers is on fire?" "Nah", said I, more interested in making sure to swirl the Condensed Milk just right around the cone of crushed ice to the top, without breaking it down, which would not do at all, mashing up all the color layers I had painstakingly laid in the snowball already. While the kid watched, Val, stepped across Royal to get a paper and comes back in looking a little scared...looking me right in the eye he said, "You may want to get over to Big Daddy's and check the TV." "What?", I said, stepping around a few more of the children waiting for their snowballs. Then da'Angel storms into the cafe, "HEY EVERYBODY! SOMEONE HAS JUST FLOWN A GODDAMN AIRLINER INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER IN NEW YORK!"
The place emptied like fire in a theater, as everyone ran to the bars across the street to see it on the Tube. Suddenly Schiro's was packed too. Suddenly there was not a car on the street outside, as I suspect anywhere else in America either. Me, I turned around and looked at the children waiting on their snowballs and asked, Who's next?

~Surely the nation will fare much better if objective prioritization replaces the current practice of funding pet projects based on political issues. When the corps releases this data, we may find that exorbitant amounts of funding is being spent on levees that actually protect few resources. The data may even reveal instances where, for just incrementally more funding, the flood protection for heavily populated areas with large amounts of infrastructure and value can be raised from 100-year to 500-year or even 1,000-year protection.

~Editilla Crowtellas~Thanks yous all for the email queries and Drake for the comment last post! Gentle'rillas, please forgive our lax postage this past week. I am deeply involved in fully gutting my new old home: Editilla's House of Piety. I closed on the 137 yr old duplex on Piety St on my birthday, February 15th, and this summer began commuting via Amtrak to Nola for 2-3 week Work Trips of very hard, dirty and revealing stripping it open. Some evil surprises came out, but good to find out and take care of now. Yet, alas, this trip has become 4-6 weeks, as one Big Dangerous Problem happened with the collapsing of the Post Federal Flood Road Home Addition on the back this past week that quite frankly threw me on my ass and held me there face down with abrasive angst and tense focus. It was so bad that I couldn't even talk about it to friends and family. It became intensely personal and a challenge that even now I remain loath to describe. But I finally decided to DISAPPEAR that ugly bad con'con carpentry, and thus we will have a Swank Back Deck overlooking a huge back yard. Perhaps I can get into blogging about this Piety House Project soon, but for now I hope this can explain my absence. How Ironic, eh? Here I am IN New Orleans and I can't even hang my New Orleans Ladder!

~There is little room for debate about the cause of our woes; the Corps of Engineers so botched our flood defenses that we were done in by no more than a glancing blow from a weakening hurricane. Blame is not so easy to apportion when gangs suddenly take to the streets intent on burning buildings, burglarizing businesses, assaulting police and generally terrorizing the populace.
